Why reading makes you happy – and healthy

Why a good book makes you happy - and healthy By Simon, owner of Archway Bookshop in Axminster, Devon We all know that reading is good for us, but you might not appreciate how good. Quite apart from expanding your knowledge, a good book has a a host of health benefits that make a real difference to life. Let’s look at some specific reasons for picking up a book today. First, reading boosts both your memory and brain function. Think of it as a workout for your mind, keeping it sharp and agile by stimulating your brain, improving memory and cognitive function. Research has shown that it enhances connectivity in your brain by strengthening neural pathways. In doing so it will help you with problem-solving, critical thinking and creativity. Then there’s the de-stressing benefit. Immersing yourself in a book can transport you to another place, providing a much-needed escape from the stresses of daily life. It’s a fantastic way to unwind and relax after a busy day. Many of us opt to read at the end of the day and that makes great sense because making it part of your bedtime routine signals the brain that it’s time to wind down. Unlike screens, which can interfere with sleep, reading eases you into a restful night. Finally, here’s a big one. By keeping your brain active, reading may help stave off cognitive decline, with studies showing that lifelong learning and mental engagement can decrease the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. So, next time you find yourself with a few spare minutes, grab a book. Whether it’s fiction, non-fiction, or even a magazine, reading is a simple and enjoyable way to boost your health. Happy reading!
