We all love a snack, but how about ‘self care snacking’? A past guest (and aromatherapist) introduced me to this concept – squeezing in something small every day, rather than avoiding ‘me time’ entirely because it seems too massive and time-consuming.
Here are a few bite-sized ideas for self-care that take only
a few minutes. Let us know if you have any others:
·
While brushing your teeth, stand on one leg.
Balance is essential in improving stability and helping preventing falls
·
Roll a tennis ball under your foot while you’re
at your desk. This stretches the bottom of the foot, loosens up your plantar
fascia to avoid injury and improves circulation
·
Consider a few super short spurts of activity in
the day – e.g. jumping jacks or a jog up and down the stairs. Even brief exercise
improves your fitness level, blood sugar, blood pressure, mood and memory
·
While you’re waiting for the kettle to boil,
have a go at 7-11 breathing. Breathe in deeply for a count of 7, then breathe
out for a count of 11. It has a calming effect on the body, relieving stress
·
Learn how to massage your own hands (there’s
advice online) – it only takes a few minutes and is highly effective before (or
during) a moment of anxiety
·
Make a charitable gift in any amount, to a cause
that lights you up. Or send a message to someone who you haven’t spoken to for
a while. Helping others can also benefit our own mental health and wellbeing.
Even small moments of peace, relaxation, gratitude, connection, or joy can make
a big difference to your health, relationships and resilience.
