Take up space!

I've been reflecting on the language that I use to and about myself. If you find yourself apologising for taking up space ('sorry to bother you', 'I won't take up much of your time'), you're not alone.

In particular, we often play down what we're good at, and over-emphasise the things we're not. We may be fervent supporters of the #bekind movement, but we forget that kindness begins at home.

I've tried a couple of new projects this week - an adult art workshop and a different type of workout. I have always been quick to criticise my lack of creative abilities, but never dreamed of patting myself on the back for being well coordinated.

For those of us running our own businesses, it's very easy to describe them as ‘little’, ‘insignificant’ and very much less important than our partners' or friends' 'big' careers.

But actually small isn't a bad thing. It can also mean perfectly formed, and the product of big input of effort and care. It can be ideal for one otherwise busy person and a perfect fit with a busy family life and home commitments. It might well be on its way up and growing, offering you stability, new skills and a chance to make a difference.

So, I'm making a conscious effort to speak to myself with kindness, compassion, and encouragement while also setting an example for my children to follow. That doesn’t for a moment mean I want myself or them to become boastful - just positive!
